Tillich dates the beginnings of existentialism from the later teachings of Schelling. In November 1842 Kierkegaard visited Germany and stayed five months in Berlin to hear Schelling lecture, having hopes that in Schilling’s declared opposition to Hegel he would find an acceptable alternative to Hegel’s system. He went away disappointed.
